The Source... Of Inspiration

As I plot my "foray" into the real estate development territory during these exploratory times, I figure I should share some cool inspirational projects/ideas as I come across them with you all.  IDEALLY, I would love to get involved with rehabbing old buildings, finding a better use for them and turing that use and vision into a reality..  Reappointed, if you will.  Sounds lofty, right?   Well, regardless of if that ends up happening or not, surveying and scouting are definitely part of the whole process and thus an important aspect to learn.  Gotsta find that diamond in the rough, ya know what I mean?

A few weekends ago, I went to this place in Denver that definitely falls into that "Diamond In The Rough" bin.  It's just opening (and yes that is in gerund form as it is opening in a "phases" sense).  It's called "The Source" and I'm convinced it's going to be the source of the next up and coming thing in the Denver area, at least.  It's located in a developing area of Denver known as RiNo (short for River North) and is modeled after the Chelsea Market in Manhattan and the Ferry Building Farmer's Market in San Francisco but on a smaller scale.  It even has hints of the Pike Place Market in Seattle.

The Source Denver RiNo TAXI.jpg

The Source, in Denver, was birthed in former 19th century foundry building with exposed pipes, brick, to maintain that industrial feel juxtaposed against the high-end nature of the vendors.  Incorporating the history of a building and not just tearing it down and starting over, but also taking care to bring the building up to the present in terms of its construction and use, is something I give mad props for.  Not the easiest route by any means and not necessarily the most cost-effective either.  I am a firm believer that if you put the time into rehabbing an old building and maintaining its character, you will reap the rewards when it's finished and give the building what's needed for visitors to establish an emotional connection to a place.  The idea of giving life to a property that was disregarded or overlooked is what provides that unique one-of-a-kind feeling in real estate. and why the prospect of real estate development seems so appealing to me.

Anyway, The Source, is a true haven for foodies and is meant to be a sort of one-stop-shop for upscale gourmet goods.  Currently two restaurants, Comida and Acorn, created by renown chefs/restauranteurs and a gourmet cheese and acoutrements shop, Mondo Market, have taken up residence in the restored building and many more curated vendors are filling in.  On the docket for the remaining "stall" inhabitants, are: "Crooked Stave Artisan Beer Project  (a brewery and tasting room), Boxcar Roasters (coffee), Babette's Artisan Breads (a French bakery), CapRock Farm Bar (all of the booze in the bar is distilled in Hotchkiss), MeatHead (a whole-animal butcher), a florist, a liquor store, a produce department, and an art gallery and design store" to really round it out. (Source: The Denver Post).

The Source Market in Denver.jpg

A glimpse into the developer angle reveals this: The project is part of a larger plan to create the next emerging neighborhood in Denver within the "RiNo area," by father and son development duo, Mickey and Kyle Zeppelin of Zeppelin Places.  The father, Mickey, is pretty much the "Godfather" or O.G. of most on-the-map neighborhoods in the greater downtown Denver periphery and has had a longstanding goal to facilitating creative projects to make Denver a "real city."  Interpret that as you will.. Or don't.  I'm sure if you're not familiar with the Denver area this all means very little to you.. and if you are, it may still mean very little.  But regardless of where you or your priorities are located, these little upscale, fresh food and restaurant gourmet food court developments, when executed correctly, are pretty neat!

Comida Cantina The Source Denver RiNo.jpg

When I visited "The Source" they had one of their two restaurants, Comida, open and their gourmet Mondo Market up and running where they were selling amazing cheeses and sandwiches among other "picnic like" snack goods.  They allowed me to sample a rather large chunk of the most creative and phenomenal cheese I have maybe ever had, created by Beehive Cheese... Brace yourselves: it was an espresso and lavender hand-rubbed cheese with subtle notes of butterscotch and caramel, called "Barely Buzzed."  And I'll tell you, my taste buds were more than just, barely buzzed, after tasting just one bite.  I also stopped in for happy hour at Comida Cantina and had some delicious jalapeño grits and their refreshingly perfect "Mint Condition" adult beverage which was made up of vodka, pomegranate lemonade, mint-cucumber syrup, lime and fresh mint.  YUM.

After my little jaunt around the facilities, which included peering through the bars of every vendor stall that wasn't already open, I truly felt a little like I had gone to the farmer's market by the time I left with based on all of the sampling and fresh food I tried.  So I guess,  mission accomplished and trend observed. (Or diamond discovered I guess you could say).  Check it out if you are ever in the Denver area!

UGGS... Are Killing It This Season!

Can I JUST get a $1000 gift certificate to spend on Uggs?  I mean, is that really too much to ask??

Ok, ok... I will be the first to admit that I have been known to voice a very loud "UGH!" whenever I have seen people wearing the original Ugg boot during the past few years.  No disrespect to anyone still rocking them, I do get it.. They are comfortable and warm and in some territories, are the only boot that really does the trick if you're residing in colder climates (which I have not been).  And, in the spirit of full disclosure, I was actually quite into the whole Ugg boot trend when it first hit the scene.  But I think it was the all-too-popular denim jean skirt and Ugg boots combo look that really squashed any love I had for the brand.  It was just SO played out.  Us ladyfolk don't need to be walking around like a bunch of robots that have pledged mutual dedication to a single trend... especially one that frankly, lacks common sense.  Fur lined boots with mini skirts? Think about it.... Not exactly practical.

HOWEVER, this past weekend, I came to find out that Uggs have made the comeback of the year! They have come out with some seriously cute shoes.. Like, I am dying over them, and the problem is that, not only can I not decide which pair I like best, my bank account doesn't support the purchase of any of them!  You should probably start crying me a river.

So, I'm going to plead my case to the universe as to why it is imperative that I come into enough money to make my shoe dreams come true.

I have seen these on and they are even more amazing in person!  Buy them here.

These are lined in sheepskin (10 points).  I'm always wondering if I can rock the high tops with my non-twiggy legs but this sneaker-boot style could make any set of legs look good.  I'm convinced.  Buy them here.

And don't go saying you want them too and asking the universe for your own gift certificate because that might hurt my chances.. You know?

Just kidding! I love you all!

The Antidote to Evil

If you felt the jadedness of society this Monday in particular (me!) or just "have a lot of feelings" I have just the ticket to melt your heart and bring it to boiling point in a flash.  This magic remedy is called: MasterChef Junior and it is masterfully, adorable.  If you've heard of MasterChef, a chef competition TV series that is judged by the infamous Gordon Ramsey, restaurateur Joe Bastianich, and renown chef Graham Elliot, a minor amount of guesswork will lead you to exactly what you hope this show is:  Kid Chefs that can actually hack it.  Specifically, "kids" is classified as 8-13 yr. olds.  In my opinion, MasterChef Junior is the best reality show to hit the air, ever  (and trust me, I know my way around the reality TV circuit preetty well).

tense-because-too-much-confession-ecard-someecards.jpg

While watching the first two episodes; I laughed, I cried, I cheered, and I pleaded.. and I am dead serious.  No doubt because they are just kids, the stakes and their feelings make you feel much more emotionally invested and affected by their raw reactions and pure naïveté.  They don't have any secret motives and don't subscribe to the ruthless competitiveness that plagues other reality competition shows.  To the contrary, they actually cheer for each other (unheard of!) and cry when their opponents are sent home (cue the flash flooding in my tear ducts).  Basically, for the two hours that my eyes were glued to the screen (which gives the impression of passive watching, which it was not... I was actively engaged throughout the duration), I literally felt my heart swell.  Kind of like that feeling you get when you see puppies or babies, but multiplied.  So, the takeaway?  If you're having a bad day, watch this and I guarantee your faith in humanity will be restored..

Masterchef Junior US Kitchen.jpg

But, even more amazing than the amount of utter cuteness, is the fact that these kids are remarkable chefs!  Truly.  It's like you're listening to adult chefs make and talk about food but the voices are coming from these tiny beings.  That have to stand on stools to reach the counter.. A.D.O.R.A.B.L.E.  (Think: the e-trade baby commercials).

102-003-junior-masterchef-photos-lightbox-tbd.jpg

My favorite kid is the one who certifiably has ADHD and needed help reaching some of the ingredients on the shelves of their mini "market" where they collect the ingredients they need.  Like, stop it.   Or actually, my favorite is the girl who looks just like a mini version of Jenna Lyons.. Or wait, the kid with a thick New York accent, that wears a different Hawaiian shirt each episode.  Ok actually, I can't decide, they are all precious.

MCJr01-02.jpg

The kids are subject to the same standards as the adult chefs in that they must produce palate-pleasing AND visually appealing dishes (through proper "plating") within the 60 minutes allotted for each of the challenges.  At the end of the show, the winner will win $100,000.  Many of the kids have aspirations to use this money to open a restaurant, take their brothers to an amusement park, go to culinary school.. or become a pro wrestler.

If I've piqued your interest, the show airs on Fridays 8/7c on Fox but is also available to watch online, here.  (I found it on my On Demand).

Pure goodness.  I promise.

Friday Finds: Creative Decor

To conclude this week's creative decor theme, I've come up with a "Friday Finds" of some pretty dope furniture and accent pieces that don't just meet the decorating  "status quo."  I am going to let the "finds" speak for themselves.  Check 'em out!

Also, totally random but completely worth mentioning.. Are you all as obsessed with this burgeoning song as I am?  "Unbelievers" by Vampire Weekend... It's pretty UNBELIEVABLE if you ask me and I've been listening to it over and over and over again... And over again, because that's my music listening M.O. in a nutshell.  I am officially recommending you give it a listen and see if you can manage to keep it out of your head, of which I have been unable to do.

Hope you all have Vampire Weekends!  (In the sense that you are "sucking the marrow out of life").  DO IT.

Werking From Home

As I work on pimpin' out my cocoon at le parent's house in Colorado, one of the spaces that needs tending to is this small little room that was converted from a bathroom into.. a small little room within my bedroom.  It's kind of awesome though because it's perfect for a little "office" set up within my new "adult" bedroom.  I just sent this rad old roll top desk I inherited away to be lacquered in a creamy white color (please don't hate on me for deciding to paint it), along with this vintage chair I found among the depths of my dad's old office furniture storage.  We'll see how they come back, as the "lacquer guy" was a find from the ol' Craig....  More updates to follow on that, of course.  But in the meantime, in keeping with the theme I've tried to adhere to this week (did you even notice?!) - "creative decor elements" - how's that for ironic, as there is certainly nothing creative about that theme?  However, I have been trying to get the creative juices a-flowin for y'all through visual rather than verbal inspiration, so I guess you could say I'm off the hook with regards to creative banter?  That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Anyway, today I want to shine the spotlight on creative home offices.  There is quite a range of what is "acceptable" in a home office as opposed to what would fly as a legitimate office in which one would entertain clients.  Although, I think that flexibility leaves the door for creativity WIDE OPEN.

So, enough with all the word vomit, geez... let's get down to "business!"

dh-sho-talk-house-of-honey.jpg

Boom.  Starting off with a bang, if I do say!  There is really nothing "home-y" about this home office.  It gloms onto the glam in a major way!  And I am lurving that bust.  It seems to send the message not to mess with the person behind the desk - they've gotten "reinforcements."  Negotiating is not exempt from home debates.

House_of _Honey_Office.jpg

I have admired the above office for far too long.  My seester's business partner used to work for the designer of these delectable digs, Tamara Kaye-Honey, of House of Honey Design.

Khloe Kardashian Home Office.jpg

I'm sure if you've been on the internet before, or television, or in a grocery store, you have heard of this notorious family called... "The Kardashians?"  If so, you've also probably seen this office before, since you're obviously someone interested in home decor if you're reading this blog.  If neither of these scenarios apply to you, let me enlighten you.  This is the home office of Khloe Kardashian that resides in the home she shares used to share with former NBA player/meth head, Lamar Odom.  (Too mean?)  The silver lining to the whole thing being the fact that she gets to do work in this office, obviously!

All White Home Office.jpg

"Fresh-faced and bright" is a phrase I would use to describe a lot of the home office styles that seem to be trending as of late, and it's easy to see why!  Bright colors and white evoke a sense of purity and happiness... "And happy people just don't kill their husbands"  (Name That Quote: Legally Blonde)... but for real, feeling happy makes doing work seem a lot less sad.  True story.
